Title: About to start my first build: What books should I buy?
Post by: big bustle on January 10, 2007, 04:46:58 PM
hey all,

i just ordered my first kit from GGG (sin-ei fuzz clone). i wanted to really dive into pedal making and i was wondering what sort of books i could check out that will take me to being able to transfer a schematic to breadboard and to understanding fuzz biasing?

i went to BN to check out craig anderton's book (electronic projects for musicians) but they didn't have it in stock. it's pretty much the only book i heard of that deals specifically with audio circuits in the fx world. i know there are tons of amp books.

I own 3 of Brian Wampler's books and find them VERY useful.  I think you will also find just hanging and trolling this board will teach you a ton as well.

Anderton's book won't help you with transfering a schematic to a layout or with biasing. And almost all the projects in there run off of bipolar power, which is more of a hassle to deal with than most of the projects you find online. It has very little explanation about why or how the things work. I've found answers to every question I can think of in articles online or by posting to this forum.

If found this one very simple to understand and it really helped me understand some of the effects schematics:

Look at the beginner project and dive right in. Make something and the biasing and other harder topics will come later.

Read the Wiki.

I honestly think that the stuff you can find on the net is at least as good as any book, and often better. By all means get any of the books mentioned above, but you will soon put together something better by printing out stuff you find by reading the wiki & searcing (both google & here).

the internet has so much to offer. i have Craig andertons Electronic Projects for Musicians and DIY projects for guitarists. there good books but i havent learnt alot from them. i didnt buy these book until i had been building pedals for a year or two.

if you really want some books try a library and see which ones look good, you would be surprised even if they are not directly related to guitars i found a fuzz cuircuit just in a standard electronics book once.

I didn't even know how to solder when I did my first this summer.  Between this board and geofx and the like, I was golden.

Knowing how to solder would have made it easier, though. ;)
