Title: Wire shielding wrap?
Post by: Taylor on March 26, 2011, 03:38:52 PM
I've wondered if there was some kind of material that would allow one to wrap shielding mesh around already-installed wiring, or else to make your owd shielded wire using the kind of wire you like. One could then put heat shrink tubing around it, or not depending on the installation.

I know this must exist but I'm not sure what it's called. Any leads?

I know I've seen it around, check this site out http://cableorganizer.com/metal-braided-sleeving/ (http://cableorganizer.com/metal-braided-sleeving/)

A lot of interesting stuff here too, but not wire sleeve, although some of the mesh here looks interesting for shielding acrylic or ABS boxes.

I like the idea of sleeping under the Faraday canopy, scroll down and check it out.  :D

yeah, that type of usually braided, shielding is available in various sizes. After using heat shrink, it would tend to be a bit stouter than a commercially available cable but like you say, you can build a custom.

Never used it but it looks fairly easy to work with and comes in different widths and materials??

I was expecting to see a fabric sleeve available like some of the materials in my second link, but I'm not finding it.

Do you want to be able to solder to it, so you can ground an end? Those sleeve types look really nice but you want to add them to already installed wiring right? Guess it would be easy enough to desolder one end to install and be worth it since it would be very neat looking. Let us know what you decide to go with if you continue on with the quest! Good luck.

I would want to solder to it, yes. I don't have a specific situation in mind, and I'd be willing to desolder stuff tos lip a sleeve on if that was necessary. I'm basically thinking about things like my WTPA sampler (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=86729.0). There are some digital signals that couple into the audio path very loudly, causing pops and clicks. I'd like to shield my in and out wiring.

Sometimes I want to be able to shield wires, but don't like going back to regular stranded wire now that I'm spoiled on Small Bear's pre-bonded wire.

Beldon makes copper shielding available near me from this supplier. Must be other suppliers out there that might work better for you.

They also have the Techflex and heatshrink to put a nice looking cable together.

I've also dissected old cheap Radio Shack coax and used that shield around a couple Teflon cables  covering it all with heatshrink.

Good link, thanks Dave. Now to find it in the EU ...

The old 'shrink wrap/store-logo' cables I got from the music store had stranded wire, barberpole wrapped around the final insulation layers.
Wrapped up better with a right twist than a left twist..point being that cable Mfr. decided that shielding' could be had with a simple strands-wrapped method.

Couldn't you use de-soldering braid to replicate this type of shielding? I use the pre-bonded Small Bear wire also and frayed a bit of braid out wider than it comes off the spool and wrapped it around a short length of wire, barber pole style, to see how easy it was to work with. Piece of cake. Heat shrink would hold it in place nicely and braid is pretty darn easy to solder. Not very costly if you have braid around all the time, a little went a long way.
