Transistor options for a raspy Vox Tonebender circuit

I've been looking at David main's comments about his 1966 fuzz and that he always uses an OC76 in the Q2 position to get the raspiness of the old Vox Tonebenders.  I worked up a version of the circuit with two AC125s (HFe 85/130 respectively) and it sounds good...but not nearly as raspy as I was hoping.  I don't have an OC76's laying around, and I had thought that the AC125 might be a suitable substitute.  But I'm wondering if anybody's had luck with other types of transistors in the Q2 position that help get that raspy sound.  I've got a bunch of 2n1378s, some 2n404s, and some 2n1307's and 1309's, but I have a feeling those aren't well suited for what I'm after.  Am I wrong? Any suggestions?
