+1 on using clips for heat sinks - I found some copper clips, the heat transfers more efficiently (quicker?) than the stainless ones.

Thats what I use too.. small copper alligator clips with flat noses.  (Not pictured).
I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

Its an older model someone gave to me.
My tips last a long time.
Although I do have several types of tips I swap out as needed depending on that I am soldering.
The same held true for my previous Weller iron, did finally die after about 30 year of use.
Even then, never had a problem with tips burning up.

What model is your weller?    Do the tips have a number on the heater end?
