Great project to start with. I'd go for it.

I guess if you omit the 1750a transformer you can use it as a preamp. An add it for an amp. I am not sure what beavis says though

I don't think the tube cricket is clean at all, is it?

Will.mendil

Well if I understand correctly it is meant to be a tube preamp with a small IC "power amp" it goes from clean to overdrive. If you omit the power amp you get the tube preamp which could I guess be used alone. Beavis has another tube overdrive. But this one should definitely be clean but warm

If you want a battery operated circuit:

Look for a pdf near the bottom of the page (Triodes at Low Voltages).

This is probably not very helpful but I'll post it anyway. In the July 2002 issue of Poptronics (RIP), there was a project called "The Tubester". It uses a 6F5 tube but you can use a 12AX7 if you want. This one is also battery operated (and similar to the one in the pdf above).

Maybe you can find it archived in a local library. I searched the web for it once. The only place that claimed to have it required the purchase of a subscription to see it.

Fun little circuit, one of my first builds. Goes from clean to distorted/crunchy. One of these days I'll get around to building another and trying some modes.

I am looking for a clean head phone amp, and I just bread boarded the tube cricket.

I omitted the tone control, tube stage 2, and removed the gain pot and components from pins 1 to 8 on the 386. But this still does not give a clean amp sound.

I do not know what the voltage is suppose to be at bias point 1? But I did adjust pot in both ways, but could not get it clean sounding.

Could the impedance of the head phones be causing this?

Just using the 386 as a amp does give me a clean sound, but really want to add the 12AU7 tube to get that warm feeling.

Thanks
Rob
