I have a Velleman VTSS5U Soldering Station, and the screw that allows you to tighten the tip started to crumble apart. The screw part has gotten really corroded and brittle.I tried to tighten it,and it just crumbled apart.I bought a new one today. Is there some way of keeping the screw from becoming brittle and cracking?Didn't know if there was a compound to spray on it so it will last a lot longer.

Could be you are running it too hot.

Yeah, probably so.The only bad thing about this iron is it doesn't have a number setting, like a Heiko or a Weller. :icon_frown: Guess I'm going to have to save up some money and get a good one.

They are amazing, much better than the Single tip that comes with it. The ones I got are LEGIT HAKKO tips.

It's pretty much flip(switch in back) flip(switch in front) press(temp + and -) heats up to 380 in about 15-20 seconds

Nice!

> it doesn't have a number setting

So what number would you pick? That's not a simple question. You don't just set the melting-point of your solder.

It's a _50W_ iron. I find a 35W plenty big for everything. 25W might be ample for nearly any joint in a stomp-box. Whatever, I would not run it Full Up, big red zone. Probably medium orange band or even on the edge of thin yellow. Solder should melt fast, but the iron should be NO hotter than what it needs to do that, or all the iron's copper will heat-rot.

Or RTFM:
