State Variable Filter: Negative or Positive input ?

Hi there,

Yesterday I was tweaking a Meatball type circuit I had built some time ago and got wondering what the difference is between routing the audio signal to the negative input of the State Variable Filter and routing it to the positive input?

The Meatball uses the negative input, like I could see it in most datasheets, lessons showing the SVF. But the Mutron III uses the positive input.

I tried it on my pedal to see if I could hear a difference and it seems that there is more distortion when using the positive input. And It seemed louder. With the negative input, it sounded cleaner. Would this account for the Mutron's more "in your face" sound? (or is that just a result of the input gain stage?)
I'm not completely sure about this though, as it could well be just an impression. Between the moment I tested one option, desoldering resoldering, testing the other option, my brain may have forgotten what it had heard ...

Is the gain bigger when using the positive input, creating more distortion?
