Green Ringer works @ 7, NOT 9V [?]

 With 9 v supply I Was debgging my brains out. I happened to try a near dead battery and it 'Green Rings" pretty good. I don't understand it.
Otherwise, above say 8volts, it's like clean sound or boost tone with about 1:1 gain.
...ok...it's not perfect...I used 100k for Q1 base to ground, and 'percentaged' the related base to V+ resistor.
Just posting the question to see if what's going on might be obvious to someone here.

The GR is one of those pedals that NEED a 100 ohm coming in on the power supply.

I'll dig out my working voltages if you need em...
