inkjet water slide decals - printing colors not working well

All - I've printed a few water slide decals over the last couple years but have only printed in black ink.  All with good results.  So now i'm trying to print using color, red only for this decal, and the red ink pools real bad and just gives an overall bad print.  The black comes out just fine, no pooling and has nice sharp edges.
I'm wondering if this is just an issue with inkjet water decals and colors or if i may have bad ink.  The reason i ask about the ink is i buy from one of the local 'refill' shops.  It works fine on paper so i never noticed an issue.
So the question is this, do you water slide decal users have issues printing colors.

My printer setup is a Brother MFC-495CW
