I'm trying to rebuild the tascam 488 mkII channel 1 preamp on the breadboard to see if I can make it into a pedal. (i really like to distort my bass through it when recording). The schematic however calls for a u101 8 pins ic. I've never heard of those and the internet is giving me a hard time. can someone enlighten me?

That's the component designator - notice how the next opamp in the schematic is called U102?  ;D

There's a little list tucked away in the schematic that tells you what components to use for U101, U102, etc. U101 is a uPC4570, and this thread may be relevant to your interests: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=49678.0
