wanting to make me a high gain llammma

what can I use for the drive in place of a 1m linear pot? like a 500k linear would work ?

midwayfair

Link to a schematic, please.

But if you're building the normal version, then a 500K will have half as much gain as the stock schematic.

the pedal is all about gain - looks like I have to place an order. appreciate the reply

Cannot see a schematic there, and cant be bothered to read vero layouts, but a 470k or 510k resistor in series with the 500k pot? lose half the range, but if it's about gain, no problem

midwayfair

There are better ways. Here's an actual schematic.

This is an inverting op amp stage. The gain is set by the 1M pot's value (which is variable) + the 100K in series with it (R4) divided by R2. At minimum, R2 and R4 divide with each other and give a gain of 1. At max, the gain is 11x. If you want exactly the same gain with a 500K pot instead of a 1M, you need to reduce R2 and R4 by the same ratio.

with all those unused inverters, you could wire one with a gain of 2, and switch it in and out to make-up for your 500k pots max gain of 6. and if you can't stand the inverted output, there are still unused inverters.
don't make me draw another line.

this is my 1st year of physics ..101 and we only cover the basics of electricity - I cant really read a schematic yet. I drew out the opamp buffer and finally got it to vero . So vero is all I know right now, basically copying and learning on the go. I just love this pedal and always wanted one. i was going to try my hand at anodizing an aluminum enclosure for it to.

this one might be a lit too advanced. I was recommended the one knob fuzzes and am still waiting on parts in the mail 3 weeks later ..so i got itchy because i had most of these parts from a previous order ( I ordered a ton of wrong parts not knowing about voltage and ohms when I first started minus the 1m pot)

this might be the time to start trying my hand at the bread board and going step by step ..this damn physics class and my stats class have me so busy I cant hardly even sleep , so I am on hold for a few days doing homework, hopefully my packages arrive in the mail for the one knob fuzzes. I am going to try the DAm meathead one and try it on bass and guitar :)

that schematic looks like to separate pieces , where do they connect?  I think I can see how the bottom is working from doing the opamp buffer a couple times but I am not seeing the 9v connection except on the separate top diagram . the bottom one uses two ic chips in the circuit? the vero layout I had only had one.   wiring up a resistor pot from a schematic is also something I have never looked at before but it would be a good time to learn. pretty sure lug 1 is input, lug 2 is output and lug 3 is ground. So my guess would be, the pot is shown as the resistor, comes in off point/connection 9 ic to lug 1, out lug 2 back to the connection of the 100pf cap and then 10 on the iC  on to C6 and then they have what looks like a 3rd pot?  should only have volume and gain ?  now I am seeing a b1m , a 1m and 10k log ? lol

If you've a breadboard, BeavisAudio (see Jon's schematic above) has a nice tutorial on breadboarding the Red Llama as well a good collection of others to get your feet wet with and help get breadboards sorted.

perfect!  I was just looking around his website and couldnt find that..sweet, much appreciated

this forum is amazing, all of you guys are very helpful! this is exactly what I need

Learn how to read schematics. Doesn't take long, and it's a necessary skill for this hobby:

update _ i am able to follow the flow of the signal for the most part, wont lie lol..the way its laid out in comparison to the schematic still puzzles me ..but I am picking a few thing sup here as I go along

I dont have a 100pf cap , so would a .022 cap work? its only slightly larger in value on teh scale? wouldn't in theory it hold more of a charge to work with , or would that extra capacitance send a volt or a shock to the rest of the system? see the tropical fish cap ..thats what I am trying to use in place of the 100pf ..we shall see soon, I am off school and work this friday and will most likely have this done by friday night

also, when I look at a pinout of the 4049 chip, it shows 5 opamps and this diagram is showing 6 ?

davent

You need a smaller cap there, 0022uf = 22,000pf, a fair bit bigger.

http://www.hamradio.cc/electronics/capacitance_conversion_chart.php

And the 4049 does have six buffers but only two are being used in the Llama circuit.

LightSoundGeometry

yeah , she is a little down the scale aint she :)

My order from china I placed like 6 weeks ago finally arrived ..I have a bunch of pieces now including the 100pf cap :)

I can attempt to breadboard the one knob fuzz now , which I may do and put teh llama on hold as the llama seems to be a little a above where I am at..which is the buffer/opamp stage

duck_arse

lsg - have you really got that 4049 on your breadboard in a socket?

I do .., with an oversized cap to boot   :D

oh wow..sounds more alive than the one I bought new..Im blown away . only error was the volume pot drilled off center , first enclosure I ever drilled..not worried about JB welding it as it works and sounds as good as anything I heard or played

Brisance

with small hole errors you can widen the hole in the correct direction and move the pot and screw down tight .

Cozybuilder

Saint Louis Toneworks-
Congratulations on completing this build, happy to know it works well. I like the hammertone paint too.

I just designed a new fuzz circuit! It almost sounds a little different than the last fifty fuzz circuits I designed! ;)

davent

Big one at the bottom right looks to have stripes around it near the base, but then i wouldn't trust my eyes either!
