cheap guns suck ..if you cant get a good flow with the proper tip you are risking a flawed build every time ..solder is a funny thing - i went the 4 buck cheap route and paid for it in wasted time x parts when a layout wont work imho - you might have a technique down to use them but I couldnt do it 
I just played them blues! Blah! Was halfway through a build on a pcb and the dreaded "blob" rolled out of nowhere and splattered my pin 6 & pin 7! . Feeling down. Glad I found this thread. My iron totally sucks! Lol!

I have a Weller TCP 24V 50W soldering station.
I own it since the early 90's of last century. It still works ok.
The tips last very long as already mentioned in this thread.
I use a sponge to clean the tip
