Parallel FET transistors in Ed Guidry BSIAB schematic

Please can someone explain to me how the parallel FET transistors work in Ed Guidry's BSIAB brown sound in a box work together. I understand the basic operation of the FET but on the schematic the top FET has a fixed voltage supplying the gate. I'm guessing that somehow the two transistors working together produce more power, the source of the top FET supplying the drain of the bottom one but it's just a guess. This arrangement seems quite common in pedals of this kind. Thanks
