dang, that is a lot worse than a pedal not working !

Sorry to hear that, but I think you have the wrong forum altogether. May I suggest:

I refuse to answer on the grounds...
After seeing the pic in that link, I needed to find some MindBleach.  ;)

now you made me look!! *gouges eyes out with spoon*

jokes aside, Jonny, you need to be a member to view posts on the forum you linked to, so maybe it'd be better copy/pasting your post here. this is a much better forum anyway.

OK sorry, here goes!

Hi guys, thought I would finally take the leap and build a SHO clone as it is apparently easy. I've wired everything up using this schematic

which was included with a kit I bought off ebay.

It passes sound but sounds like an extremely gated fuzz and the volume pot doesn't seem to do anything :(

I did a continuity test to make sure I hadn't bridged any tracks on the veroboard and it seemed fine, any ideas where I should start troubleshooting?

here's the veroboard wired up

and here's the pot

I think I have got all the components in the right places, I was a bit confused about the pot though as the pedal came with two wiring diagrams, one of which showed a ground wire going from lug 2 to the jack which I added.

Going to take the switch out of the equation tonight and see if that narrows it down

And here's the wiring diagram which I followed and seems to contradict the pot wiring guide in the schematic  :?

and finally here's the switch. I'm aware there's a lot of excess wire, my plan was to make sure it all worked and then tidy it up although I'm not sure that was the best idea  :|

OK so I've taken the switch out of the equation and it is still doing it, currently got it laid out like this

Here's a shot of the rear of the veroboard

The pedal only makes an audible sound when I play really hard and that is the earlier described farty fuzzy sound like a broken speaker!

Farty, sounds like it could be the transistor is not biased properly.
Double check your values.
Could be a blobby solder bridge.
101 possibilitys.
Ma throats as dry as an overcooked kipper.

Smoke me a Kipper. I'll be back for breakfast.

also the volume pot doesn't seem to do anything to the sound...

is it worth buying another transistor to try in the socket?

jonnygreentrees

also I've got a multimetre are there any values I can measure to see if something isn't working properly (and how do I measure those values!?)

here is an example of  SHO I just did of you want to see one

mine has the power/smoothing cap problem going on ...I asked about it earlier and the forum said it was okay ..so I am selling it

but here is what it should look like

I can already see you are missing the first jumper right after C1

jonnygreentrees

thanks that's really helpful!

did you use the same layout as me?

I have two jumpers on the board, not sure if that's clear from the photo?

LightSoundGeometry

#17
no you got it then, its hard to see but there is only two

I think its a solder problem, your layout is sloppy and not tight. could be a case of not enough practice.

and dont buy any more kits , just buy all the pieces yourself

jonnygreentrees

yeah it's only my third time soldering ever and my first ever pedal build!

which bit is sloppy? tips for improvement welcome

LightSoundGeometry

well I would just practice taking components on and off ..solder/desolder

your joints are sloppy, pull everything tight and neat ..takes time. I am still new myself
