How much does wire length and vicinity to other wires affect an audio circuit?

Hi guys, so I've made a circuit, but it's pretty buzzy and stuff. I know most people here seem to print or etch their own PCBs, and hence in the pics I see of pedals' guts, there are very few wires. However, in my circuit, there are... a bunch of wires. They are pretty close to each other (some in contact with others, just separated by the insulating jacket), and some of them are a little long (~1"). I'd include a picture here, but I don't want to make you guys ill  :P

How much does this matter? Could that give rise to bad effects like these? Or is it a much smaller effect?

It really depends on the signal strength, phase and impedance traveling through the wires. Sometimes it causes really noticeable issues like oscillation other times it causes issues you dont notice until you change the layout and the circuit sounds different.
You've got to love obsolete technology.....
