I was a bit surprised to find that this forum has no facility
for attaching images or files.

This is from a small ''Electronics Circuits For Musicians''  book
which I ordered from the UK in the mid-1980s. I've misplaced
that book, but had luckily photocopied these pages then.

I remember building this for a friend at that time.

I think it sounded halfway between an overdrive and distortion.

The circuit is basic and has to be modified to be of use in practice.

I think R6 can be replaced with a 500k variable resistor as
a Distortion control.

Another variable resistor will have to be added as a Level
control, I guess at the output after C5, or after Pin 7 of IC1.

A tone control circuit could be also be added in.

The mechanical bypass switch, S2, could be replaced with
one of those Boss flip-flop type FET switching circuits.

S1 could be replaced with an input jack with a ganged switch.

this is the Penfold fuzz, no? Very intriguing.

(there's a demo in there but it doesn't reveal anything to me)

Images, files, youtube clips - they need to be posted on something like google drive, imgur, etc and the image address inserted with the icons above left - the mona lisa for images

Yes, I think it is from one of his old books.

The video doesn't show much. It doesn't sound he is using
an electric guitar as the input ?

The VCA's circuit tends to smooth and filter out the fuzziness,
cleaning up the sound somewhat.

I remember when my friend played it at that time, he quite
liked it, but commented the distortion was not really enough
and said it was more like an overdrive, as I had used a 100 k
variable resistor in place of R6.

I think that guy's sound is harsher and dirtier sounding because
he had used IN4148 silicon diodes instead of OA91 germanium
diodes.

Note that he had used a 220 k variable resistor as VR1 for
the ''Fuzz'' control.
