That diode is there for overvoltage protection.  If you can be 100% certain that you won't apply more than 12V, you can leave it out.

Just remove it. It's not neede, has no effect on the sound, and protects nothing unless you are in the habit of connecting random power supplies to your 9v pedals. It's just one more thing that can go wrong.

Just wanted to say thank you to everybody for helping. As I would not have figured this out....

all working, pulled the diode, and by luck I had a spare. installed it with the stripe/pos going the correct way....

works great... now I just need a centaur decal!
