Can I sub in 2n5484's for the 2n5457's in the chasm?

Do you mean Chasm Reverb?

As I can see, 2N5484 would work there. Both are Jfet.

I guess J201, J112 or PF5102 will be a good replacement too.
To you, buffered bypass sucks tone.
To me, it sucks my balls.
