I've bought four of these bad boys locally: http://alltransistors.com/transistor.php?transistor=41797
They are huge and badass and look like 60's ufo's.
Very low hfe (mine showed 30-40).

A fuzz face is an obvious option - I have an etched ggg fuzzface pcb and will try the "Boutique Late 60's NPN Fuzz Face Version".

Any other circuit where these would fit particularly well?

Checkout pinkjimiphoton's entries and Stupid Pedal Tricjs videos. He puts together a lot of fuzz variations and often has lower gain Ges.

I'll try any ToneBender with - ground.
EQD Tone Reaper or Hoof fuzz.
To you, buffered bypass sucks tone.
To me, it sucks my balls.

Negative ground Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face.. I still like the old standby.

I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

Rangemaster? If the gain's are too low, you could pair them up.
