Does a CD4053 CMOS Require a Buffer Before It?

I read somewher on one of these forums that the CD4053 requires a buffer before it to protect it from static discharge on it's inputs. Is that a fact or is that forum misinformation?

Buffering will impose protection for the 4053, but maybe not essential. 4053, like most 4xxx series CMOS chips should have input and output protection built in. However, it can be a good idea, if possible, to insert some series resistance between the outside world and the chip pins. This will limit any fault causing potentially destructive current flow in the chips protection diodes. A 1k series resistor, will add some protection without altering normal function in most guitar circuits.

You also can use diodes to gnd and V+ for protection..

I like that idea!

A buffer will also negate the impedance effect of the 2-3 bias resistors you'll need for each switch, and allow you to use lower values to achieve less switching pop
