You can make a distortion with a JFET?? Wow, who knew that?

(Maybe those strange dudes Jack and R.G. in the References?)

I do note that the "0.5 V peak-to-peak input signal" is really 0.5V peak.

Also "high input impedance of the circuit makes it a good match for the output of an electrical guitar" should be "fit" not "match".

Reference 1 has a serious over-simplification. Ref 3 has flaws, but I did not go-on to Part 2.

Quoteyou can take your distortion pedal effects devices off the grid with just an everyday battery.

The 1960s have finally arrived!

Hmmmm...this is actually very interesting.  Two matched low noise N-channel JFETs in a 6 or 8 pin package.  I wonder how much lower the noise is compared to a run-of-the-mill 2N5457.  May be worth playing around with - a Dr. Boogie with LSK489 chips anyone??
