Hello everyone,
Brand new to this and was very much hoping not to have to most something like this, so sorry in advance, anyway...
I am very much a hands-on learner, and while I have been putting in my time researching pedal building, for me, if I can't hold it in my hands I could read up on things for the rest of my life and It will all still be gobbly-gook at the end of the day, so, of course, I went and made a bone head mistake right off the bat.
I didn't want to order a kit because I felt I would just be assembling and not learning, so I looked up a bunch of values of commonly used conponents, ordered a bunch of those and a breadboard. Got the package today and the capitcators I received are way too big. I feel very stupid and frustrated- insert horny teenager metaphor here.
To cut it short, I guess volts are a pretty important value for capacitors as well as nf huh? While I find a bunch of nf rating, I don't see much onvolt ratings, in online info, I am sure they are there and I missed them.
What volt ratings do I want to order? ... And can I use these way huge ( pun intended) caps for bread boards or am I just stuck with finding a new hobby ( as if I already don't have projects going on now- just built some pedal boards, rewired/set-up a guitar, endless synth crap... I actually make music, too...hahaha...anyway...blah blah blah...still a moron)

I am just learning about electronics, so again forgive how annoying this post is-The caps I got are ranging from 50 volts to 100 volts ( and yes, I somehow managed to order some 1uf 250v that are two thirds the size of a 9 volt battery, escapes me, too-

What volts am I looking for guys?

I promise I am not looking for hand holding in the future, I learn well on my own once I have it in my paws. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Voltage on caps .. as long as you're rated over what you supply, you're OK.  It might be a tough fit, but there's a lot of pedals out there that use bigass caps for "mojo" .. I don't care for it myself personally.    Just go to Tayda and order what you need in bulk, and get like the 25v rating for electrolytic type, and the rest will be like 60+V usually.

You can use the bigass ones in the breadboard probably fine as long as you don't trim the leads too short.. it'll look like a forest, but that's ok.

Hey,
Welcome to the forum, you've come to the right place. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful, not like some other sites.
Seeing as with effects pedals you're mostly going to be dealing with 9v power you just need capacitors with a higher rating than that. 16v capacitors would be fine but since occasionally you might want to run something off 18v you might as well just get 25v capacitors so you can cover both eventualities. The difference in size between the two is negligible.

Wow, thanks so much... I very much appreciate the responses.

To clarify some-
What I have

Greenies-
.033 mfd 100v
.47 mfd 100v
.022 mfd 100v

Radial film:
.47 uf 250 v ( orange)
.047 mfd 100v ( orange)
.01 uf 400v ( orange)
100 mfd 50v ( black silo shaped)
47mfd 50 v ( black silo shaped)
4.7 uf 100v (black silo)
Imfd 50v ( black silo)

Polyester film:
2.2 uf 50v ( yellow oblong)
1uf 250v ( white and huge)

Disc cap:
.01 uf 50 vdc ( small orange) maybe ok?
.022 if 50vdc ( small orange) ?

Ugh.

If I use the big white ones or will be a forest with a castle in it...hahaha... Thanks again. You guys are awesome.

To over-simplify...

Different parts for different work. There's 1.7V jogger-watches, 600V tube amps, 10,000V Tesla coils-- you don't put golf-cart tires on your dump-truck.

Most pedal work, the caps MUST be over 9V rating. Some may only need to be 3V. It is customary to pencil 16V minimum all caps.

Some caps, a 16V job is so small it is not worth making. If you find a 100pFd 16V it may be too small to handle. It is not uncommon to wind up near 100p 100V even 500V.

47uFd is surely Electrolytic (not Film), and 47u 50V is a large can for a small pedal. This really could be a 16V part.

I strongly suggest beginners buy from a Guitar Pedals Parts specialist. There are several. Some have a LOT of parts, many non-pedal-size. A pedals-only site is not likely to stock parts that won't fit a pedal. After you handle a bunch of parts, you may be more confident buying from mega-suppliers

we like to look at pictures of things around here. seeing as you now have a thread, why not show us wot you got? we will make plenty jokes and suggestions, but some of those might trigger an idea for a build "down the track". your resistor stash - what size did you get?

and, welcome.
You hold the small basket while I strain the gnat.

The other way around works just fine though, whether you are talking about capacitors or golf carts.
