Investigating IC's ?

Hi Guy's,
Is there any way to ascertain what Type an 8 pin IC is if it does not have any visible marking's, I've noticed before in some pedals that the chip's didn't have any marking's

I think somebody can make an educated guess by looking at what type of circuit it is and where and what's connected to the IC.

If you can very accurately measure the DC voltages on each pin (with no input), I might be able to make a pretty good guess.
