TL071 for TL072?

Can I always substitute TL071 for TL072? Is there any significant difference? I'm eyeing the AMZ Overdrive Pro to build and it has TL072 but what I have is TL071.

Thanks
Oh yeah!

TL071 is a single opamp and the TL072 is a dual opamp. You can use two TL071s in place of a single TL072 with some wiring, or you can use 1/2 of a TL072 in place of a TL071 with some wiring, but they are NOT pin for pin compatible. The TL074 is a quad opamp if you see those.

What the man said !

@Peter: This is the shortest and best explanation I have ever seen, great !

Peter:  Don't forget that if you just use one of the op-amps in a dual chip, you need to ground out the inputs of the unused one.  In one of my very early breadboard experiments, I didn't do this and I managed to smoke a TL082.

Very good point David. Thanks. :)

I've never smoked an opamp this way, but maybe I'm just lucky. You always want to keep the inputs at the same voltage.
