how's the octave in it?
could it be used well for bass as well?

I breadboarded this one a few weeks ago, and it had a decent sound overall considering the very low parts count.  I found it worked better when it recieved a boosted signal, and better still when it got a distorted boosted signal, so I added the Easy Drive circuit before it.

Not much octave on the lower strings, but from about the 12th fret on the D string and above it was very prominent.  For this reason, I'd say it probably wouldn't work too well with bass as is, but perhaps some mods would change that.

I experimented with lots of different diodes, and they have a pretty big effect on the effect  :)  .

Hope that helps.
