The RadioShack stores here seem to be pretty standardized as far as what kind of components they carry is concerned. For the parts I know they carry in the stores, I will only have to go to two different locations at the most. They usually fall down on caps, so I end up having to go to another one close by. It seems like there is not more than 2 or 3 miles between any one location...

mannn its just a west coast thing...

it seems that rat shack is still the only game in town for me...

does anyone happen to know of any other electronics suppliers on Long Island, NY...

Quote from: AxmanjrI thing that I noticed about Radio Shack is that if you've been to one of them, then you've been to all of them. They all carry exactly the same parts- which is cool- but sometimes it seems limited.

A dozen or so years ago the RS store at Saratoga Ave. and Quito Rd. in Saratoga California used to be stocked to the gills with every single item in the catalog and then some. You could go there and be absolutely certain they would have what you were looking for. At some point the management changed and they started looking like a normal Radio Shack store - tidy and neat. But you could no longer rely on them to have everything in stock.

Quote from: ErikMillerFrom my observations, there are differences from Fry's to Fry's as far as what they carry and how well it's stocked.

Seemed that way to me too. I thought the Santa Clara store was pretty good and I love the Context Engineering extruded boxes they had.

- Never EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER buy an opened box item from Fry's

- And know what the hell you are looking for before going in there. The people who work there are mentally incapacitated.

Remember that the reason you have opened boxes at Fry's is because of their liberal return policy. You can always take back a box that was opened or closed when you purchased it.

I think there are good and bad employees at any retail store. I've seen a lot of customers there that look positively mentally incapacitated. Imagine the effect that would have on the employees dealing with customers all day.

Some will recall that pre-Silicon Valley Fry's was a supermarket where you bought your groceries. You can still see remnants of that mentality at the checkout where you can pick up some Twinkies before you go home to wire up your latest gizmo.

The other thing I really didn't like was that check out line thing. I've never been anywhere with a set up like that. I found it kind of strange.

Axmanjr

I agree- they have one person designated to tell you where to go!  I wish I had an easy job like that!

axmanjr: What do you do for a living? Casino stuff?

I am in the consulting engineering field. I mostly design HVAC systems for a lot of the houses that the major builders are building here - people like KB Home, D.R. Horton, etc. Routing ductwork thru floor trusses is a lot like designing single sided PCBs! That's probably why it comes kind of easy for me...

They use green blinking lights for each cashier here in phoenix, its annoying, because you have to watch a string of 300 cashiers some 300 feet long looking for a light to light up... (well slight exageration, but on the weekend theres a honest 25-30 cashiers easy)... Another annoyance, they use one printer on the larger receipts, I got a zillion res. caps and had to wait forever while the my receipt sat in the spool waiting to print... Ah well, its all part of the fry's experience.. :D I have to laugh at the check out person too, I walk up with said zillion res. caps and they just look in the bag and mark the ticket with a hilighter... Should have made them check every part haha... ;)

With all the dozen's of blues songs that start "Gonna get up in the morning" , its a fact that blues musicians are apparently the only ones that actually get up in the MORNING...

In Canada we have a chained called 'Active' ,part of Future Electronics and it seems as the years go buy there is less and less stuff on the shelves. Going to their online store I see why, they don't even offer components anymore! It's all tools, chemicals, connectors, test equipment and the like. The DIY market must be getting smaller and smaller? I guess I'll be getting more and more stuff via places like Digikey ...

Paul - I am currently in my 3rd year, studying to be an Electrical Engineer at UNLV.  But I work at Sunrise Library- hoping that one day I can find an internship with an engineering firm.  Yeah, engineering is the way to go- especially when playing with electricity!

Paul Marossy

axmanjr-

That's cool. So what do you think you will be doing when you get out of school? Do you want to stay in Las Vegas? If you go into the consulting engieering field, there is praobably another five years of building here, if Lake Mead doesn't dry up first...

Axmanjr

Paul- I'm still unsure.  I just got into the electrical part of schooling this semester (the last couple of years were wasted- I mean spent- doing all the core requirements like English and History...).  As far as a particular field, I want to be able to see what is offered before I make a decision.  But I will more than likely be staying in Vegas for quite some time (this is a great city- dispite the heat!).  Las Vegas will always be in need for engineers!  However, I would like to pursue my Master's, if I'm not burned out by then...
