The Alembic preamp could also work as an overdrive or a distortion?
A Tube distortion like the McTube, wouldn't work as a preamp as well?

The McTube is a preamp.  It's just a different model Fender Champ front end.  You'll want to get rid of the 1M resistor in series with the output, and raise the value of the volume pot to at least a meg or two.
