Anyone built this? 2N5133's seem to be pretty thin on the ground, wondering if a 2N3904 would be a good sub? I've got a 2N5088 in there now, and the boost is fine, but I'm really after the 'compress / fuzzy' sound that Charlie describes on his build page for it. With the 2N5088 it doesn't seem to matter if the 43k/39k resistor to ground is switched in circuit or not! :?

BCxxx, I think these sound alot like what you described, however, tried in an LPB, with different value input and output caps.
As much 'different' sounding as any NPN type I know of in a circuit like this.
5089 might give a better performance than a 5088 in this circuit, and could also be lower noise.
You can chain more than one of these circuits, and use the 1rst stages volume control as a gain control for the second stage, possibly trim the value of the stage 1 vol pot.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Hi Mike,
It's been a couple years, but I think I just used the NTE equivalent in my Hog's Foot... NTE161.

Pete - thanks, but I want to get this circuit working exactly the way Charlie did, and the way it sounds on the sample! :)

Charlie - thanks also, I'll see what I can do.

Cheers
