NPN Boost giving poor flanger effect?

I just built an NPN boost as per the beginner project, and I'm getting a crazy flanger like effect on the upper frequencies in the signal. Most its just a loud, high frequency hum. Could this be a bunk transistor (2N5088) or maybe just misbiased?
