GGG's Big Muff Pi circuit. Who's built one?

I'm just curious. Who here has really built this http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/v2/diagrams/bmpsc.gif circuit?

Before I pull my hair out (see my other post), I'd like to know that others have sucessfully built one. And I don't mean similar, I mean THIS one. I would also like to know if anyone has personally AB'd the GGG Muff and the Russian reissue Muff.

I personally have not, but JD builds them and sells them on his site using that schem. What transistors did you use?

Personally I have and it sounds like a less woofy USA BM.

If you've got the time I could use the help -> http://www.diystompboxes.com/sboxforum/viewtopic.php?t=22496

I finished mine last month.  I used 2N5089's for the transistors and 1N914's for the diodes--nothing fancy.  The sound is not as over the top as other muffs that I've played, but it will still sound like your amp will  explode if the volume and sustain is maxed out.  I used mostly cheap ceramic caps and that worked out well.  I tried some germanium diodes (not 1N34A's) the gain and volume was much less than the 1n914's--it had a more subdued feel to it.  If I wanted a stock big muff, I think that I'd just buy one.  I built this one to tinker with and adjust to my liking.  My diodes are all socketed so I can try different combinations.   I need to do the same for the transistors.   I think that there are many variations of the muff, so if you mess with transistor's, diodes, and cap values you could get the sound that you want.  It was a good build for me.  For the future, I want to build a 4ms Duo-distorter and see how well it does the muff and silicon fuzz face thing.

I think the schematic is OK, but I had endless problems with the layout, I think there's a problem in there, I too lost a lot of hair over the BMP.........

I've built about 60 units _exactly_like the layout shows on the site.  All have worked great.  What can I say, this is one project that I know works. It is similar to the russian green BMP, so, of all the big muffs it sounds most like that model.

The audio probe is probably the best tool to use for debugging, if the voltages are similar to those listed.

I built one about a year ago, it had no problems at all which is unusual for me(I almost always make at least one mistake).

I've built that circuit three times, and any problems I had were totally of my own doing (turns out you can't solder through laserjet toner!) The project works no problem.

Yep, the fault was mine, which I figured all along. I bought what I thought were 470pF capacitors and they turned out to be 47nF caps. I did NOT buy these from Small Bear, I bought local. Until this this week I didn't have a meter that would measure down to 470pF so I couldn't double check them.

I have an order in with Small Bear for a parts, including the correct capacitors.

This Forum is a great help.

I built it.
