After listening to live at leeds and hearing this pedal, i definatly want to build it. The one problem is the diodes and transistors. I cant find 2sc828(Q) transistors or 0A-90 diodes. Also, would metal film resistors produce noticable noise level differences compared to carbon film? I kinda wanted to use 1/2watt metal films to drop the noise level; I use my amp cranked so theres already alot of hiss.

I've heard that people have success building that circuit with 2N2222A transistors and pretty much any germanium diode. //www.smallbearelec.com has both.

my unicord model u1095 superfuzz uses 1n34a's and bc537's
this pedal was my first love, the minute greg k. at rockhaus showed me what it could do!
I was 20 and totally awestruck! i wish i still had the cardboard box!
this design could be totally different, i've never compared it to any schemes, don't want to disturb the "magic" it's the orange and blue 70's style

you can also try the guyatone fuzz (tz 2) which is a cpoy of the superfuzz.

Those are 2SC537's. Higher gain than the 2SC828 Q's of earlier models. Mine have had 2SC828 Q, 2SC828 T, 2SC536 G, and 2SC537 G transistors. OA90, 1N34A, OA79, and unmarked germanium diodes.

Any silicon NPN with hfe between 200 and 500 should do the trick. Same thing, any germaniun diode should be fine.

There may be a layout here:

Good luck!

thanks dan, i was just goin' by memory (which can be bad!) i never really open 'er up too much! don't want temptation to take over and end up ruining a good thing. like my old boss said " you know just enough to be dangerous!"

thanks, i think ill go for the 2n3391's at small bear, they have a hfe of 250. Ill also go with the nos germanium diodes.

Ah, yes. That's been a while. I drew that out in 1994, about. It was on the first effects DIY web site.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

thats the schematic that i found, it seems identical except for a few changes. I guess either circut will work?

Yeah you can use pretty much any high gain transistor and it will work.  One commercial copy uses 2N5088s and 1N60 diodes.
