Hi there!

I play quite a lot of Ska and Reggae, what stomp box could i build that would give a good clean sound for ska rhytem playing?

Mike Burgundy

sorry, but - none?
Otherwise, compressors, (choruses, flangers), wahs, , tone boosters...
Most of the ska "spunk" is in your fingers, a low action and a certain tendency to bounce around though.

slapback (short delay)

Rickenbacker + VOX AC30 = spanking ska tone.

Man I loved that set up, wish I still had it!

Shrimp down the pants!!!

hadn't even created yet, and He was not so pleased.” God (aka Tony Levin)

most of the tone comes from the plad pants, into suspenders combo.   :)

But seriously, a MOSFET boost will give you your high end back, great for ska.

envelope filter/autowah?
chorus?

i'd say a phase 45 for the reggae stuff.
a lot of bob marley tones can be found with that thing.
it's also one of the easier time based effects to get going with

I second the envelope filter suggestion. Listen to the backing guitar on several Bob Marley songs (Jammin' for example). Perfect filter sounds. The thing is, I can't listen to that song without hearing Police Chief Wiggum from the Simpsons.

Oops! I re-read your post and saw that you were looking for the clean, chika-chicka-chicka rhythm sound. All the ska bands I've seen have used a clean amp for those sections and kicked in some overdrive or distortion for the modern punk-ska stuff. Great music! By the way, what songs are you doing? Any Prince Buster or Specials numbers?
