Has anyone made the Jawari from this site?:
http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/folkurban/fuzz/snippets.html

If so, was it hard and is there a PCB layout available?? It sounds interesting!

niftydog

search, my friend!

a good couple of threads in the archives here.

Thanks for that. I've had a bit of a look around, and was just trying to source the parts. There are a couple of things I'm unclear about, like what is the transfor 42TM018 or 42TL218? Do they have other names?
And what is the J201??
Sorry, I'm new.

niftydog

the j201 is a transistor, a FET actually. This forums FAQ section has quite a bit of info about it, and google will bowl you over with useful hits.

The transformer is what it says it is; a 10k:10k audio transformer, mouser part no. 42tm018 or 42tl218

(folks, this is where it's useful to display your location in your profile. I have no idea where talking_goat is, and hence I can't even be sure that mouser is going to be of any assistance to him!)

Don't be sorry that you're new to this, just have a bash and expect to learn a lot! Electronics is just one of those things that you can go on learning about forever and still not know everything.

There's quite a few threads that can be found here via the search feature that will direct you to websites with intros and tutorials to electronics basics.

...and, google is your friend! type j201 into google and hit "I'm feeling lucky!", you might be surprised!

Thanks, I noticed your from Canberra. I'm actually in Melbourne. Do you order stuff from Mouser?? How long does it usually take. Finding parts I need at short notice is a bit of a pain. I'm a bit impatient, when I decide I want to do something, I want to do it now. I tried searching for the transformer and J201 on Jaycar but it didn't return anything. Are these hard to come by parts or something?

niftydog

QuoteDo you order stuff from Mouser??

no, but I'm in the fortunate position of being an electronic engineer... so I rarely order stuff for myself! But, there's nothing to stop you from doing it. Lead time would depend on what you order.

QuoteI'm a bit impatient

well, you'll have to learn some patients for electronics!

QuoteI tried searching for the transformer and J201 on Jaycar but it didn't return anything. Are these hard to come by parts or something?

Jaycar are ok, but they have a very limited stock of semiconductors. These parts aren't really hard to come by, compared to some of the parts I need to source for work! You just need to know where to look!

Here's some links to Australian suppliers that might get you started;

http://www.altronics.com.au/
http://www.farnell.com/australia/ (j201 in stock)
http://www.radioparts.com.au
http://www.rockby.com.au/ (j201 in stock)
http://www.rs-components.com.au/ (j201 in stock)
http://www.volt.com.au/
http://www.wescomponents.com (best to request a paper catalogue from these guys for now, their web site is in development)

Just keep in mind that I found all of these myself, via google... the internet is a fantastic resource for electronics. Use it wisely!

Now, as for that transformer!  You could order it from mouser, it's a mouser part, ie; it has the mouser brand stamped on it. But, it's made by Hi-Q (shown on the mouse link I gave before) and it's just a 10kohm:10kohm center tapped audio transformer.

Now, armed with that info, I would start with google, search only australia;
search term; "10k:10k transformer" got this result;

http://www.delsound.com.au/transformers%20audio%20coupling%201%2003.htm

The one in this list is probably suitable.

AND we just found ourselves ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN SUPPLIER to add to our favorites!

easy ain't it?!

I wouldn't stop there, keep searching and you might find something even better or closer to you.

would it be possible to substitute the transformer for something else?

niftydog

Quotewould it be possible to substitute the transformer for something else?

Yes, you can sub another similar transformer.

I suppose you could use a 1:1 transformer with a different impedance, but you may have to futz the values to get it to work the same...

A 1:1 transformer spec'd to a relatively high impedance (such as the 10k I used) should work. However, that doesn't mean any 1:1 transformer will work, unfortunately. For example, 600 Ohm 1:1 transformers are fairly common. I haven't been able to get one of these to work in the circuit, however.

Also important is for one of the windings to be center tapped. If the windings are not, you might be able to "simulate" a center tap for these purposes, by soldering two 100k resistors in series between the two wires of the "secondary" winding. The junction of the resistors becomes the "center tap".

Of the transformers pointed to by niftydog, TXMIC4 looks like the better choice, since it has a winding with a center tap. TXLT5 might do in a pinch, with the "simulated center tap".

STOMPmole

talking_goat,

I can pick up the J201's from a local surplus store for $0.25 USD.  I'm in the US, but it would be no big deal for me to buy a couple of them, throw them in an envelope, and mail them to you if you can't find them locally...let me know.

As is, I plan on building the Jawari for myself (and visiting the local surplus store sometime this week to pick up some J201's.).

niftydog

Hey, talking_goat, I just realised that Rockby is in Clayton! Give them a call, all the info is on the website I gave yesterday.

Thanks for the offer I apprecite it, but I already ordered a couple with the transformer. Thanks again.

Let me know how you go putting it all together though!

Just found this in an old folder:

Sorry I don't know who shared it with us...

Charlie Barth's (moosapotamus) verified layout:

My Jawari uses nearly the same layout and sounds great.

One thing: if you build this, do not use a volume knob.  The Jawari barely reaches unity as is.
