I'm trying to build the DOD440 filter from general guitar gadgets and have most stuff in order however the parts list asks for:
1 - 0.01uF   film
2 - 0.022uF  film
1 - 0.047uf  film
1 - 0.1uF    film

Stupid question, how do you tell if a capacitor is film or not??
I have some capacitors for those values but not sure if they are the right kind.
The 0.01uF capacitor has a 103J  100VF written on it if that helps?

Quote from: MihkelA film cap shown in the beginner prject parts list thread

Mine are a similar colour but they have 103J written on them instead of 103K etc. What does that mean?

Thanks

the letters mean tolerance K is +- 10% and J is +-5%

Usually it does not really matter what kind of caps you use as long as you don't replace non polar caps (film, ceramic, bipolar electrolytic) with polar caps (electrolytic or tantalum). On some occasions a specific kind of cap might be needed but with guitar effects it is usually not the case. It might sound a bit different though, but the differences should be quite small in most circuits.

For some people those small differences can be all important though.

BTW. Film caps can look like small plastic boxes too.
