i breadboarded the diode compression example at

http://analogalchemy.com/diodecomp.html

and i couldnt get the circuit to work with the diode (i only have 1 type gen Si)
i took the diode out and put a 220K resistor in place of the 4.7M

put a 2n7000 in there and have a really nice tube screamer sound happening. its a little noisy but i think i can get that out..

try it for an easy good sounding build

It does work. I have it on the breadboard right now - just one stage.

Hmmmm.... With those parts changes it sounds like it's just a mis-biased MOSFET   ; a wonderful sound depending on how it's done.

I'm curious how it sounds after the second stage. ;)

i am gonna mess with the circuit this afternoon and try and get it to work as written.

i got it to work my way with a buncha different bjts also, but the fet sounded best.

it does sound good the way i got it tho :)

did up the second stage tonight and i am really diggin it. it went from tube screamer tone to good AC/DC grind.  had to play with cap values a little bit, and tweak a resistor or 2 and it really sounds good.

i cant wait to run it thru a my real amp, cuz all i got is my little gem..

I have a three stage mis-biased PMOS overdrive that I love the sound of. As long as you don't overdo the values of the coupling caps you can get some very powerful sound out of them.

i need to get some trim pots so i can really fine tune this baby..tomorrow i think i am gonna try a blackfire stage

i am gonna use either this or my trusty hwy 89 for the front end of my ROG Little Gem MKII practice amp.

really nice tubey grind that cleans up pretty well with the vol ctrl.

Should i shoot for 4.5V at collectors for  each transistor in both stages?

That all depends on how you want it to sound. ;)

My favorite MOSFET tones so far are from horribly mis-biased transistors. :D
