I have some Glass Bottled Diode's that have 550 stamped on them, can't find any other marking on them other than thism red tipped with gold lead's and a black band showing polarity, any body know what these might be ? I've googled my self silly but no find any info.

Check the FAQ or Simple Mods page, use [if you have] the DMM's diode checker to determine the clipping threshold [I think it's also called foreward voltage threshold] Ge's will have the lowest, [about half of an Si] Si's around .7v I think. When you get no reading invert and retest the diode.
Red Glass with black stripe I also think is Si...but the voltage clip/threshold is the determiner...and somewhere around here is the data sheet compilation of diodes clipping thresholds...1n34 has a Ge diode data sheet you can check. 1N4148 is Si. best to look 'em up tho.
