What transistor hfe's are good for Q1 & Q2 in a vox/cry baby wah.  Is the stock MPSA 18 too high gain and what does lowering the gain accomplish?  Which transistor is more influencial on the sound? And what transistors are good choices?

I personally like the BC109B transistor, with a gain of about 300-350.  Put the highest gain in Q1 and the lowest gain in Q2.  The lower gain will mellow out the sound a little so that it's not as "sharp" and they'll also increase the bass response.  You can really use any NPN Silicon transistor with gains that fall in the 300-350 range with good results.
