What kind of on/off switch should I use, and how is it wired?

You could just use a stereo jack and connect the battery negative lead to the sleeve contact so that it turns on when you plug in.

Otherwise, you could use any switch that stays on. Just place the switch in the wire that goes to the battery + side.

I put a switch on the back of the volume pot.
