I’m modding my GCB-95 CryBaby Wah. I took out the buffer. I like an NTE123 in the second transistor position, but in the first position the gain is too low (200). But the stock MPSA18 is way too high (800+). The pedal distorts when I hit a chord too hard. Can anyone suggest a common (like found at Radio Shack) transistor to try? I figure something around the 500hfe range. Thanks!!

Try sometin like a 2N2222 or a 2n5088/2n5089, these should read about 625 or there about's, somebody else may have a better sugestion though,

Cool. I think I have some of those lying around. I tried a BC182L and it barely wahed at all! The gain on those must be too low!

Remember Keen's Second Law: When in doubt, use a 2N5088.
