on the mockman schem at runoffgroove it says to reduce the 470k resistors if adding the diodes, but not to what, does anyone know a good starting value? 220k maybe? and should you reduce both resistors or just the one on the loop with the diodes?

I left mine at 1meg.  You could use 470K or 220K.  I think a 1meg pot there would be useful.  The first stage as well.  Try 1 Si diode with 1 LED.  Also, try 220K input resister to make it less mid-rangey.   I really like this circuit  Don't sweat the opamp too much, sounds good with all of them.  8)
