Hi guys.

After several dormant months in DIY effects,
I decided to build BSIAB II. But as usual I cant get all the components
in this part of the world....

1. I cant get 2n5457 trannies...   what is a good sub?
I got bunch of j201s will it make a lot of difference
if i make them all J201s?

2. Is mylar capacitor same as film caps?

Many thanks.

MARAMING SALAMAS!!

That's easy: not at all just bias them right. You will rapidly find some that cannot be biased right, some that will...

I have subbed MPF102s in place of 2N5457s before, they seem to work OK. J201s would probably work as well, although IIRC the pinouts are different. A trimpot on the source of the JFETs may help you to dial things in better when making a substitution like that.

The circuit will work with all J201's, however, the 2n5457's were chosen for their lower gain characteristics. J201's will sound 'gainier' and more compressed.
MPF102's will work also, but it might not sound exactly right. You never know, it might just be what you're looking for.

Built it !

J201 works. Its absolutely better than the first version
cause its a lot quiter and oscillation problem is gone.

My build sounds close to a blackfire cause it has a lot of gain
which I suspect is being cause by the 3 J201s I replaced with
the recommended 2n5457.

I made a very stupid mistake when I first tested it. I plug in
out and input cables in reverse which cause me a lot of time
debugging. I actually desoldered some parts, use audio probe
and go through each and every component but no luck until I decided to
sleep it out cause its getting very late. I only realised how dumb I was the next morning.

Anyways, to all people who's been involved in building this great effects.
I salute you!!!

Yes Ed that's absolutely right! Mine sounds gainer and more compressed.

Thanks man!! You build one hell of an effects.

Just for the record, I built the BSIAB I and I have never had any problems with oscillation or any other kind of problem except for when I first built it. I had some kind of funkiness with the circuit which I took care of by giving all of the FETs a socket and switching out them until I found a good combination.

I still think the original kicks A$$!  8)

Don't worry, that is nothing! I actually MANUFACTURED a box with the in & out swapped     :x at least I was able to change the artwork on the panel. So to this day, one of my boxes has the input on the "other" side!!
as for testing stuff when it is out of the box.....!
Still, my mother used to sew clothes with the arms inside out, so maybe it is genetic.
