what are the suitable voltage leds for use in guitar pedals?

i know you can get both a 12v and 5v leds, so which would be most suitable for the 9v supply in a pedal?

you don't want those LED with internal resistors - you want normal LEDs.  They shouldn't be rated by voltage, they should be rated by Vf - forward voltage drop, and maximum current.  Vf is usually something between 1.8v and 3.1v, and current is usually 20ma.  Then you need a current limiting resistor between the LED and the battery - 1k is usually good.
