Hey.

Is there such a thing as an Autocad library of common electronic parts (pots,
switches, jacks)? I'dd need these parts in 3d to see how they fit in a box but
really don't want to draw them myself.

Thanks

buy Protel 2004!

Other than that, I don't know of any.

Hey.

Protel is not what I need. It's software for 2D (oh it has PCB 3D preview)
PCB design. What I need is something to plan the layout of the parts as
they'll be placed in the box. My guess is Autocad is good at that. I just
thought there would be libraries of the various pots, jacks and other
commonly used elements somewhere on the web.

Thanks anyhow

yeah, the pcb 3d preview is intended for that purpose. I haven't seen the latest version, but I have heard that you were able to design your own components, as well as drawing the case and slotting the board into it to see if the clearances are ok.

But, since I don't have the latest version, I'm still relying on my imagination!

I have some 2D AutoCAD blocks that I drew myself if that could be of any use to you.

A very low-tech way, that would suit someone as computerphobic as I am, is to cut a stompbox sized hole in a block of polystyrene foam & then stick the pots etc into the sides of the hole. plus you could mock up the board with a thin layer of foam with components stuck in it (but only use blown chips, polystyrene can have static charges on it).
If anyone has a partner who does that toasted craft dough modelling, they could make little components for you
