I have to connect a mono and a steroe jack but which do i connect to the input and output ?

stereo's input, mono output

connect the battery's "minus" to the ring on the stereo jack.  That switches power when its pluged in and out.

You can actually go either way.

true.  Convention says to do input - it works better that way.  That way you can unplug the inputs to all your pedals quickly, wihtout aweful amp crackeling sounds.
