tube mic preamp schematics???

I'm looking for something simple.  Most of the ones i have found have either too many other things going on like a line in, and just drawn in a way that they are hard to understand.

Also, do all tube preamps have an input transformer???  That seems wierd to me... is that just to stop DC leakage, or is it because an XLR input does not see a reference to gound on the signal?
