Hey Everyone,

Are any of you out there familiar with the program MAX/MSP?

I've been using it along with their plugins lately and it's amazing.

I'm wondering if there's anyway to get those plugins into an analog environment.

For example, Slice N Dice samples up to 4 seconds of audio the chops it up into 32 different pieces and then plays it back randomly.

Cheers!

Analog environment? Hell no.

MAX/MSP into a pedal? Probably not. However, the program that was used as the code base of the MSP side of things, Pd, is open source, and could be ported into a processor that would fit into a pedal. The Via CPUs run x86 applications, and could be used for a Linux port, but the boards are pretty big for a pedal. Most of the embedded processors do not have good floating point support, but there is a partial port of Pd to fixed point.

As far as porting particular applications, there are lots of DSPs out there that could do what MAX/MSP does. The slicing application you mention, for example, could be done with a delay line (a circular buffer) and a read tap that randomly moves along the line (well, quantized random). The tricky part is to program the DSP, then design the hardware to fit it into a pedal.

The closest you could probably get it would be one of those rackmount PCs with analog ins. That would be cool though.
