Ok, so ive been building a lot of pedals lately, and am having trouble keeping up.  I seem to spend way way too much time stripping wire.

I know that wire processing machines are made.  A place i used to work had one.  I've looked all over the net, and have found very little as far as info, and almost nothing on places that actually sell them.  I want something that will "process" 24 to 18 gauge wire, and cut to at least5 or 6 inches long, and strip the wires as well... anyone know of something that is available, and not thousands of dollars?  The absolute most i would want to spend is $1000.  but really if it were cheaper i'd be able to get it a lot sooner.

hmmmm well i just found something that looks interesting that would make life a little easier... maybe...

check out the video.

maybe ill settle for that.  doesnt cut the wire, but i swear im getting blisters on my fingers from wire stripping... im sure i could handle the cutting.    Of course id rather just set it up with a roll of wire, and come back in an hour.:D

niftydog

what stripping tool(s) are you currently using?

I use and love this simple hand operated tool, the provocatively named Stripmaster!

Saves cut thumbs and severed strands and makes a nice neat, consistent length cut. Available with multiple blades, I have seen them from 10-30AWG and tasked blades for fibreglass, PVC and 1000V or 600V PTFE insulation.

You can even order custom blades!

I use the same one as niftydog.  I got mine at //www.harborfreight.com

I think that once you are comfortable with them you can strip wire even faster than that ridiculous motorized over-kill striping machine thing.

DMC tools come highly recommended, although I've only ever used their crimping tools, never the stripping tools.

I'm still in the dark ages on this one !
Knife and "thumb" i'm afraid !  My cheap "wire stripper"  just cuts the wire off every other time !   DUH !

What's the tool that has nichrome or some other heating element and strips wire? I heard that one is fantastic.

I use the same as Niftydog too. I got mine from a friend, that had one of this kind and another one, a little different but with the same function. He was going to throw them away, since he didn't use them, and he asked if they would be useful for me. A great gift.

I use the cheapest one that circuit specialists sell.  It works GREAT, and takes a very light touch to strip the wires.

Watching that video, I thought "I can strip an end, cut it off the roll and strip the other end before this dude has even gotten the second end put in."

Maybe it's better in a manufacturing environment with robots...   :D

Am I the only person who really enjoys spitting out plastic coating?
I use ribbon cable and very light speaker wire for hooking up.

well, Brett, that's fine until you spit out your front teeth as well!

My two front teeth cost me way too much money to risk anything like that.

I was going to suggest ribbon cable as well. You can get tools that strip all wires at once. I often also use IDC headers and inline sockets as well, saves stripping anything!

me too, I use the central- and/or lateral incisors
(depending on the gauge),
and do an average of 40 to 70 spits-per-minute (SPM),
depending on isolation thickness and slipperiness
of the surface...
(problems only with very short length of wires).

My tongue is being used for determining the stripping length.

That thing is amazing!  The video is great too, with a real smooth, catchy soundtrack.

funny, my reaction to the thing was that a lot of people in here could do better soundtracks for that machine!  and they could mean it... really capture the excitement of pre-stripped wires of any length shooting out of a machine... hahahaahaa!  8^)  don'tcha think?

The only appropos soundtrack would be "The Stripper"!
