I want to experiment with different transistors in the Brian May Treble Boost, not that the BC182L sounds bad. I've been looking through data sheets comparing hfe and pin configuration, and BC183 looks promising (hfe of 900 vs. 500). What else do I need to consider to avoid having to redesign the circuit?

Just put some different transistors in there. You don't need to redesign the circuit. If you want more gain, use a higher hFE transistor (BC549, 2N5088 to name a few). Or if you want lower gain, try a 2N2222A.

I spent about two hours trying out different types in mine !
Settled on a BC549C I think !  that sounded great, nice boost and a bit of "breakup"
