I was thinking, maybe there is a junk yard that specializes in this stuff.

If so has has anyone seen one and what's the name/location?

There has to be a few of these around.

Yes, there used to be a place in San Jose, CA. There was another place in Honolulu - completely filled with useful junk!

That would be cool!
but I'm sure only to a select few.

like a auto salvage place where if you find it and you remove it with your own tools you get it way cheaper than if you have them look and pull the part.
problem with that is...........
well one of the problems is that most junkyards seem to take into account that if it'll fit in your pocket it's free (thru default)!
I like to check out rummage sales and flea markets and curbs and vintage/thrift/junk stores.
I got a couple of old timers i've met thru my quest that actually keep an eye out for me, alot of it is junk, but every now and then they can score a real gem!

HAMFESTS.
That is, amateur radio swapmeets.
Rare here in AUstralia, but seem to be plenty in USA.

New York City used to have a junk collectors paradise downtown on Canal Street but I think it has mostly vanished due to the rising real estate values.

Here in Osaka there's a great section of town where all the electronics suppliers, computer parts stores and consumer electronics are all located. Since Matsushita (Panasonic) started in this area, and still has a lot of it's production here, Osaka has a pretty good scene for parts and stuff. When I first found the area soon after I moved here I felt like Columbus must have felt when he discovered America. I've been there so amny times that I'm sick of the place now though. It's always crowded and noisy just like Canal Street used to be.

OK

It looks like my hunch was right.

Now all I have to do is find one close to me.

Thanks, I won't stop looking now.

Just search for a common junkyard...
There seems to be a little corner in all of them where they dump
all the PC crap and big old PCBs from bank computers, hi-end
electronics from the eighties (cough-cough  :)  ) and all
the stuff they can't melt. Most of it is real junkers but sometimes
one can find cool enclosures, coil wire, iron cores, transistors,
tinny transformers...

Look for the BIG place where they dump the copper!!!
Go for the transformers there!  8)

Never carry a multimeter! If you don't know if it's broken just
bitte the dust and take it home to test. You'll pay a lot less if you
look casual    (All other tools are very welcome)

Don't argue about the price with a guy that keeps 300lb of iron
on his back wile talking to you. Just don't upset him.

Never let him see you concealing things other than your .38 or Cold Turkey bottle in the pocket.

Don't pet the dogs.

Try not to kick open TV set's, monitors or stereos. Use a sledge hammer
and look professional  8)

Never ever ever Ever tell a junkyard nerd that's looking over your
shoulder to F#%K OFF!!!

Have fun!

HEY!

That's a good idea (s).

I know of some places like that and now that you got me thinking, I'm pretty sure I have seen some enclosure stuff that would work and transformers too.

I'll have to look around, and use some Wild Turky for after shave before I go.

Have a happy holliday and thanks.
