How about EH 'BassBalls" or a "BazzFuzz"  which was originally a Bass only Fuzz pedal ??

Well, alot of DIY pedals will "work" with a bass, because high quality components can make sure the FX works on the entire frequency range, so there's not loss of bass tones,  but not every effect will work as well.

Most Envelope Followers/wahs will work pretty well to super with bass, but you might need to tweak some values. My EH Mini Qtron owns on bass. Fuzzes will work aswell, and are easy, but not everyone's thing (not mine at all).  Phaser, chorus and flanger will work aswell, but are a little less suited for most music styles.

A cheap and very nice FX would be something like the DOD 440 EF. A verry simple filter that sounds great and will fit in any box. Parts are only a couple of bucks. With any luck, you could make one for 30 bucks or so. You won't have a killer FX though. A mutron would be better, but harder and more expensive.

www.generalguitargadgets.com has alot of usefull schems and pcs layouts (including the DOD filter).

Anything will "work", but if it fits for bass, that's another thing. I don't think any bassplayer will have much use for a ring modulator, but then again, I'm don't know every bassplayer ;)

Would an 'expander' (as opposed to a compressor) be useful for bass?
I mean something that increases the dynamic range.

Halion

Probably not. A bass already have a very big dynamic range, while in modern music, the standard seems to be to compress the bass alot. Expanding it will not be very usefull at all.

You sure don't know me then! I'd walk across broken glass for a Blue Ringer!

Paul, expanders are used in recording situations, but for live music they are not useful at all. Bass needs to be squeezed up pretty tight then amplified carefully (turn down the bass for christs sake!) so as to be heard alongside all those screaming guitars!
